OSHA: Concrete contractor caused collapse

Companies in Peoria and throughout the nation know that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration exists to protect workers. OSHA officials are empowered to inspect hazardous conditions, and representatives take worker injuries and complaints seriously.

As a result, a Midwestern cement producer has been cited for a series of severe safety violations. The company is accused of failing to follow design plans and construction standards. The investigation was sparked as a result of a parking garage collapse in downtown Cleveland in December 2011. Workers suffered muscle sprains and strains as a result of the partial collapse, according to medical reports. The total amount of levied fines approaches $40,000.

Distracted teen driver hits, kills jogger, police say

She's 16 years old and has most of her life ahead of her. He was 44 when his life ended in a tragic car accident his father says was caused by the girl's "stupidity."

The Pekin Times reports that the crash that ended the avid runner's life as he was training for a marathon was in Norwalk, Connecticut back in March. The girl has been charged with negligent homicide with a vehicle in the case, police say. They allege she was on her cellphone at the time the SUV she was driving at about 40 mph struck the jogger.

Firm cited in worker's trench-collapse death

A Midwestern firm has been cited by the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration in connection with the 2011 death of a 19-year-old worker.

In a scenario too familiar to workers here in Peoria, the man was killed when a trench in which he was working collapsed. The Wisconsin company the man worked for allegedly failed to provide appropriate cave-in protection while the man was working in the trench. Also, an exit path was not cleared for the man to escape the trench in case of emergency.

Man pleads guilty in deaths of Peoria couple; wrongful death suit continues

Last summer, we wrote about the tragic auto accident in which a Peoria couple on a motorcycle were struck and killed as they sat at a red light. The couple left behind two young daughters, just five and two years old.

A Far North Peoria man, 30, pleaded guilty late last week to being under the influence of alcohol when he slammed his black GMC Sierra into the pair last August.

Welding company cited for 30 health and safety violations

A welding company far from Peoria has been cited by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for 30 safety violations at one of its metal fabrication facilities. The citations were issued after the Department of Labor agency received complaints about conditions at the Ohio workplace, prompting an inspection and investigation.

With multiple safety violations present, which could cause worker injuries, people here will find it understandable why OSHA has proposed fines of $94,500 for the employer.

Good Samaritan killed helping motorist in East Peoria car accident

His friends said he would always lend a helping hand, even to people he didn't know. The Sunnyland man died recently of injuries sustained after he'd pulled his vehicle over in East Peoria to help a motorist who had just been in a car accident.

The Good Samaritan was hit by a car at the intersection of East Washington Street and Illini Drive. A little over two months later, he died of his injuries.

Injury prevention: manufacturer cited for unsafe work conditions

A Midwestern manufacturing company has been cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for 20 safety violations as the result of an investigation launched in late November 2011, according to official reports. The company, located far north of Peoria, came under investigation because an employee complained about hazardous conditions that could have caused worker injury.

Afterward, OSHA has issued more than $70,000 in fines for violations found at Duraframe Dipnet in Viola, Wisconsin.

Students injured in Illinois interstate car crash improving

A few weeks ago, nine college students were driving through Illinois on Interstate 39 on their way to fun-filled days on spring break in Panama City, Florida. Unfortunately, their plans were demolished by a wrong-way driver.

The students were in a two-car caravan rolling down the highway when the first vehicle was slammed into head-on by a car driven by an 85-year-old man going up to 90 miles per hour without his headlights on. The car crash was at 10:30 at night.

OSHA cites manufacturing company for worker injury

One of the most dangerous aspects tied in with manufacturing jobs is the large and powerful machines many workers must use on a daily basis. The machines, if not equipped with appropriate safety measures, are capable of injuring or killing workers.

Residents of Peoria might have seen this notion play out as the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration tagged an out-of-state manufacturing company with safety violations after a severe worker injury.

Remembering Illinois workers killed, disabled or injured at work

"Mourn for the dead, fight for the living." That's the slogan for Workers Memorial Day, celebrated since 1989 in the United States.

On next Monday, April 23, there will be an Illinois commemoration of workers injured, killed, disabled or made ill. The ceremonies will be 5:30 p.m. at the Peoria Labor Temple, followed by a walk to the Workers Memorial Monument at City Hall.
